Cordoba

Last weekend the group headed up to Cordoba for the day. Unfortunately, it turned out to be one of the last summer-like days here in the south of Spain :(

Cordoba is home to one of the world's most famous mezquitas (mosque). It was built in the 8th century, and as my Cultural Islamic teacher calls it "la puta madre de las mezquitas en todo el mundo" (I'll let you look up the meaning of that)
Mezquitas are known to be huge, but this one was enormous. For being in such a quaint city, the Mezquita is most definitely the focal point.
The Torre (tower). Every mezquita has one and they always face the direction of Meca
One thing all of my teachers (Islamic Culture and Art History) skipped over, was, when the Reyes Catolicos (Catholic Kings) took over Spain, they turned the most incredible (and one of the most sacred) mezquitas into... a church. They just had to go and ruin it for everyone else didn't they
At least they were nice enough to not destroy all of the arab beauty...just a third of it
After hearing and learning so much about this mezquita, it was amazing to finally see it in person. The muselmanes (muslims) truly put all their efforts into their religion and their dedication is quite easy to see in this beautiful work of architecture and all the art that resides inside and out.
